Shatterverse

The Shatterverse is a story about a group of somewhat unusual individuals from a variety of alternate earths.  The story will span a novel series which is intended to be both a fun adventure and a commentary on the flaws inherent in much of our society.

The whole thing started out as an idea with a group of friends some years back, and has morphed and changed over the years.  The story takes place about a century in the future, from our point of view, though the actual year varies from reality to reality.  Some of the main cast can jump from one alternate earth to another, while others have to rely on technology to pull off the same trick.

This has resulted in a two-sided cold war as two different factions – the Terran Imperium and the Alliance of Free Worlds – poke around from alternate to alternate trying to find each other's home alternate.  The problem is that the Imperium is several hundred years ahead of the alliance and has a massive military, along with a nasty xenophobic streak, and they have an ruler driven to unite all of humanity against the potential for hostile alien invasion.  However the Alliance is plagued by communication problems, logistical nightmares and petty infighting, made worse by the fact that the Imperium has a gate in orbit that can move their spaceborne navy (it would be overly generous to call it interstellar, though it technically is) while the Alliance does not.

As Chaos Nexus opens it inserts a new force into this stalemate in the form of a small fleet orbital refugee ships that had been built as their home reality's star prepared to swell into a red giant billions of years ahead of schedule.  Their original plan was to head out of the solar system, but when dimension-shifting technology was invented, the ships were retrofitted to traverse quantum layers as they sought a new home, and stumble headlong into the middle of a war they neither want nor are equipped to deal with.
